Orange County Officer Accused of Sex Assault Leaves Job
March 2005

The Irvine Police Department suspended Officer David Park, a three-year veteran because a 32 year old part-time dancer who was driving on a license suspended from a DUI conviction accused the officer of threatening her with arrest if she didn't fondle him during a traffic stop in Laguna Canyon. She also accused him of fondling and sexually assaulting her. She has filed a lawsuit against the City of Irvine , seeking at least $10,000,000. Irvine Police Chief David L. Maggard stated that Officer Park no longer works for the department.

Some of dangers and disadvantages of representing yourself may be obvious, but some are subtle.

The judge will expect you without the assistance of the lawyer or the judge, to follow all the technical rules of substantive law related to your case, civil or criminal procedure and evidence.

In a criminal case, the case against you will be handled by a prosecutor who is an experienced attorney and has the prosecuting agency, such as the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office and law enforcement on his side.

You will not be entitled to special consideration or assistance by the judge.

Things you will be expected to do: analyze pleadings such as complaints and motions for summary judgment, make pre-trial motions, respond to and propound discovery; take depositions, select a jury, make an opening statement, cross-examine witnesses such as police officers and expert witnesses, make appropriate objections and motions during the course of hearings and trial, prepare and argue jury instructions; make closing argument, and make post-trial motions.
