Tattoos and Law Enforcement

August 21, 2005- LA Times

A growing number of police chiefs and sheriff's across the country including Los Angeles Sheriff Lee Baca, say tattoos present a negative image to the public. According to the article, law enforcement chiefs say that tattoos blur the line between cops and criminals, partly because tattoos are common among gang members and inmates. LAPD is required to cover their tattoos while on duty. Baca is considering the same policy.

The Times revealed the "dark history" regarding tattoos within the LA County Sheriff's department. In the early 90's, some deputies at the Lynwood station, who called themselves the Vikings, were found to have engaged in racially motivated abuse on the streets. Many had tattoos similar to the NFL's Minnesota Vikings. Also noted in the article are the tattoos worn by the thugs involved in the LAPD Rampart Scandal. Several of the notorious officers in the Rampart's "Crash" (Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums) the so-called anti-gang unit, had tattoos that some say symbolized their evil ways: a grinning skull with demonic eyes.
